MONMOUTH, Ore. --- Momentum seemed to be on the Western Oregon men's basketball team's side as
Jason Gallant calmly drained a 35-foot 3-pointer as time expired to send the contest with Alaska to overtime, but the Wolves couldn't capitalize and fell to the Nanooks in the extra period 89-84 Thursday night at New PE Building.
WOU (5-18 overall, 2-13 GNAC) found itself down 73-68 with 29 seconds remaining and was down 77-74 with seven seconds remaining after an Alaska (8-15, 6-9) free throw. The Wolves got the ball in Gallant's hands and the junior drained the 3-pointer to send the game to overtime as the buzzer sounded.
WOU took an early three-point lead after
Trey Wilmot drained a 3-pointer to start overtime and led 84-82 after a
Cameron Benzel dunk at the 2:56 mark. But that's the last points for the Wolves as Alaska went on a 7-0 to end the contest.
Gallant finished with a career-high 31 points to lead the Wolves (including 10-for-10 from the free throw line) to go along with seven assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Kris Cook had 16 points and was 4-for-9 from 3-point range, Benzel finished with 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks despite battling foul trouble and Wilmot finished with 11 points and five assists.
