Wolves split a pair of games at Concordia Kickoff

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Western Oregon softball team split a pair of games at the Concordia Kickoff on Saturday, defeating Biola 4-0 and falling to Sonoma State 9-1 at Freedom Field.

In the first game, the Wolves (1-2) got a five-hit shutout from UTEP-transfer Mackenzee Collins as the senior struck out three and walked two in the contest.

Collins got all the runs support she would need in the second inning when Kate Ronning hit a sacrifice fly to score freshman Aaliyah Gaboriault in the third inning to make it 1-0. The Wolves tacked on a run in the fifth when Gaboriault scored on a Biola error.

WOU added two more in the seventh with Ronning with an RBI double to right center and Isabelle Lewis hitting an RBI double to right as well.

Victoria Zimmerman went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run for the Wolves while Gaboriault went 2-for-3 with two runs and a stolen base.

In the loss to Sonoma State, the Wolves gave up eight runs in the first inning - aided by four WOU errors in the frame - and never recovered. WOU's lone run came in the second on a Sophie Franklin RBI triple to score Chelby Smalley - one of the Wolves' three hits in the contest.

Jessica Morgan got the start and the loss, going 0.1 innings and giving up five runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks. Erica Soliz pitched the final 4.2 innings - giving up four runs (two earned) on three hits with four strikeouts and four walks.

WOU concludes play at the Concordia Kickoff on Sunday with a schedule yet to be determined.
