MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon women's basketball team gave 14th-ranked Montana State Billings a run for its money Thursday night at New PE Building, but the Wolves fell short, 67-60.
WOU (10-12 overall, 3-8 GNAC) trailed the Yellowjackets (20-4, 11-1) 14-11 after first quarter and were down 22-15 in the second before going on an 11-1 run - ignited by a
Triniti Youngblood jumper at the 4:48 mark and capped by a
Cali McClave bucket with 2:14 left to give the Wolves a 26-23 advantage. A McClave layup at the buzzer gave WOU a 28-27 lead at the break.
Ally Harman drained a 3-pointer to start the third to increase the lead 31-27, the Wolves' largest lead of the contest. However, quick 6-0 run by MSUB gave the Yellowjackets the lead back at the 6:52 mark and they wouldn't trail the rest of the contest.
WOU didn't go away as the Wolves trimmed a 10-point deficit with three minutes in the fourth quarter down to 61-58 after a McClave 3-pointer with 1:27 left.
However, that's as close as WOU would get.
McClave finished with 20 points, five assists, five steals and four rebounds for the Wolves, Harman added 13 points (going 3-for-5 from 3-point range) and four rebounds while
Jodi Noyes just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. Youngblood had a team-high six assists to go along with eight points, three rebounds and three steals.Â
WOU returns to action 2 p.m. Saturday at home to take on Seattle Pacific.
