BURNABY, B.C. --- After dropping the first game in extra innings Friday, the Western Oregon softball team bounced back in game two for a 5-1 win to split with Simon Fraser on Friday at Beedie Field.
The Wolves (16-13 overall, 4-2 GNAC) used an RBI groundout by
Isabelle Lewis in the first inning and a two-run homer to center by the senior in the second to build a quick 3-0 lead.
The Red Leafs (6-22, 1-9) scored a run in the bottom half of the inning, but WOU gave itself breathing room with an RBI single from
Carley Schlag (her first career collegiate hit) in the sixth and a
Sophie Franklin RBI when she was hit with the bases loaded in the seventh.
It was more than enough for
Erica Soliz as she tossed her first complete game of the season (and first since 2021), giving up a run on four hits with five strikeouts and six walks. Lewis led WOU at the plate, going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run while
Kate Ronning was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs.
In the first game, WOU and Simon Fraser were scoreless through seven before the Red Leafs' Abby McGlynn hit a one-out, walk-off homer to end it.
Mackenzee Collins picked up the tough loss, going 7.1 innings and giving up a run on four hits with seven strikeouts and three walks.
Bella Valdes led WOU at the plate, going 2-for-4.
The teams conclude the series with a doubleheader Saturday starting at noon.
