BURNABY, B.C. --- Western Oregon softball's
Mackenzee Collins tied a 26-year WOU record with 16 strikeouts in game one,
Erica Soliz tossed her second consecutive complete in game two and the WOU bats came alive as the Wolves swept Simon Fraser, 5-2 and 5-1, Saturday at Beedie Field.
In game one, WOU (18-13 overall, 6-2 GNAC) got an RBI single by Valdes in the ninth inning and tacked on another on a Red Leafs (6-24, 1-11) error to beat SFU in extra innings.
Collins didn't allow an earned run in the 16-strikeout performance - giving up no earned runs, five hits and walking two in nine innings of work. Her 16 strikeouts ties Sarah Everhart's 16 strikeouts for WOU against New York Tech in 1998 for the most in Wolves history. It's the fourth time this season that she has reached double figures in strikeouts.
At the plate,
Sydney Conklin was 2-for-4 with an RBI,
Sophie Franklin was 2-for-4 with a run and Valdes finished with two RBI.
In game two, Soliz - a day after tossing her first complete game since 2021 - did it again as she gave up one earned run on five hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
The Wolves broke a 1-1 tied in the third on a
Natalie Willoughby two-run shot to right center to make it 3-1. In the next inning, Valdes hit an RBI single and eventually scored after stealing third and scoring on a SFU error.
Valdes,
Victoria Zimmerman,
Kate Ronning and
Lexi Carlos each had two hits for the Wolves.
WOU returns home Saturday to open a four-game series against Sain Martin's.
