WOU softball gets walk-off win in game one, has 8-game win streak snapped in game two

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon softball team won its eighth-straight game with a walk-off single by Sophie Franklin in extra innings in game one, 5-4, before having its win streak snapped by Montana State Billings in game two, 3-6, Friday at WOU Softball Field.

In the first game, the Wolves (11-8 overall, 3-1 GNAC) and Yellowjackets (7-16-1, 1-3) were tied 2-2 entering the sixth before MSUB scored on a passed ball to make it 3-2. WOU answered in the bottom half of the inning however, with Lexi Carlos driving in Chelby Smalley to tie it up.

The score remained that way all the way to the 11th inning with the international tiebreaker in place starting in the 10th (a runner starts the inning at second). After holding MSUB scoreless, the Wolves put runners on the corners with one out after a Carlos single. Franklin - who hit a two-run homer earlier in the game - took the first pitch she saw and drove it through the left side for the game-winning hit.

Franklin finished 2-for-5 with three RBI and a homer, Sydney Conklin and Smalley each went 3-for-5 for the Wolves while Victoria Zimmerman and Carlos were both 2-for-5 with an RBI. Alivia Holden got the win, giving up just one unearned run on one hit with a strikeout and two walks in four innings of work in relief. Mackenzee Collins - a day after striking out 13 Yellowjackets - went seven innings and gave up two earned runs on four hits with nine strikeouts and four walks.

In game two, the Wolves fell behind 3-0 in the first two innings and never caught MSUB as their win streak - the longest since 2014 - came to an end at eight games.

Kate Ronning went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and a run while Conklin went was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a walk. Erica Soliz got the loss, going two innings and giving up two earned runs on five hits with a strikeout and no walks.

The Wolves return to action 1 p.m. Monday as they host Corban in a non-GNAC doubleheader.
