WOU softball bats come alive in doubleheader sweep of Central Washington

ELLENSBURG, Wash. --- The Western Oregon softball team bats came alive as it won both games of its doubleheader with Central Washington, 10-2 and 4-1, on Saturday at Frederick Field.

The Wolves (20-19 overall, 8-8 GNAC) scored 10 runs off 10 hits in game one against the Wildcats (13-24, 8-8). WOU's run-filled performance started with a six-run third inning. Bella Valdes led off the inning with a double to left before scoring following two CWU throwing errors. Maddie Doig followed with an RBI on a fielder's choice before Lexi Carlos drove in another off a single to left, making the score 3-0. Karly Tiedeman walked with the bases loaded to force in run number four of the inning before Valdes in her second at-bat of the inning drove in two more to make it 6-0.

The Wildcats scored two in the fourth, but this is all they would get as the Wolves scored four in the sixth – thanks in part to a Natalie Willoughby three-run homer to right – ending the game 10-2 after six innings.

Alivia Holden got the win for the Wolves, going all six innings, giving up 2 runs (one earned) on six hits and four walks while striking out four. Sydney Conklin finished with a double while Valdes finished with a double and two RBI. Carlos went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Willoughby finished 1-for-3 with a walk and the three-run homer. Doig finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Sophie Franklin finished with three hits.

Game two once again got rolling for Western in the third when Kate Ronning scored two off a single down the left field line before Conklin was walked with the bases loaded. The Wolves scored one more in the fifth when Doig singled to center before the Wildcats scored their lone run in the the fifth, making the final score 4-1.

Mackenzee Collins got the win for the Wolves, giving up one run on four hits and four walks in seven innings of work with seven strikeouts. Ronning finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. Doig finished 2-for-3 with an RBI while Conklin had two walks and an RBI. Victoria Zimmerman finished with a hit and a run scored.

By winning both games Saturday, WOU splits the series with Central Washington and finds itself still tied with Central for both fourth place in the GNAC standings and the last playoff spot with two more weekends of play remaining. The Wolves pick up the action again Friday for a doubleheader against nationally ranked and second-place Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho.
