Wolves drop doubleheader to #17 Nighthawks Friday in Idaho

NAMPA, Idaho --- The Western Oregon softball team dropped both games of its doubleheader Friday against 17th-ranked Northwest Nazarene, 4-0 and 3-1, at Halle Field.

The Wolves (20-21 overall, 8-10 GNAC) were held scoreless in game one by the Nighthawks (35-8, 18-4). NNU scored in the third and never looked back, although WOU would get close to scoring in the seventh when Maddie Doig hit a one-out double down the right field line, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunity thanks to Northwest Nazarene's strong pitching performance.

Alivia Holden got the loss for the Wolves, going six innings, giving up four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two. Kate Ronning and Doig had the two hits for the Wolves, with Doig's hit going for extra bases.

In game two, both the Wolves and the Nighthawks dueled it out pitching, with Mackenzee Collins going the first four innings without giving up a hit and striking out five – including striking out the side in the second. Western Oregon scored the game's first run in the fifth when Sydney Conklin singled and eventually scored thanks to a Sophie Franklin double to center. Northwest Nazarene responded in its half of the fifth, scoring three and making the final score 3-1.

Conklin finished 2-for-3 with a run scored. Franklin finished 1-for-3 with an RBI double. Collins got the loss, going all six innings, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.

WOU finishes its series with NNU with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11 a.m. (PT) in Nampa.
