WOU STAT LEADERS WOU HEADING INTO THE WEEK
The Wolves opened the season at D-I Idaho State and fell 50-10 on Saturday in Pocatello. WOU picked up a field goal just before the half from freshman Keaton Emmett and scored a touchdown late in the fourth on a Fersh Ison 19-yard run. The Wolves finished with 221 yards of offense (114 rushing, 106 passing). Defensively, Tyler Copeland had a team-high eight tackles and added an interception while Malcolm Luifau had seven tackles, a pass breakup and a forced fumble.

CAL POLY HEADING INTO THE WEEK
Cal Poly took on Stanford - now in the ACC - and fell to the Cardinal 41-7 on Saturday on the road. The Mustangs tied the game at 7-7 with Stanford early in the second quarter on a 22-yard touchdown pass from receiver Michael Briscoe to tight end Jake Woods on a trick play. The score remained that way until late in the second quarter when Stanford scored with 21 seconds left in teh half to make it 14-17.

It was the start of 34 unanswered points by Stanford as Cal Poly fell to 0-2 on the season. Quarterback Bo Kelly was 17-25 for 149 yards. Receivers Michael Briscoe and Giancarlo Woods each had over 40 yards receiving. Running back Aiden Ramos had four catches for 30 yards. Defensively, safety Jake East led in tackles with eight while fellow safety Brian Dukes Jr. had seven. Defensive end Elijah Ponder got in the Stanford backfield for 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack to go along with four total tackles.

Two decades of Coach Ferg at the helm, 39th overall at WOU
Western Oregon head football coach Arne Ferguson enters his 20th year (19th season due to no 2020 season because of the pandemic) and his 39th year overall at Western Oregon (spending just one season outside of Monmouth in 1992). He was a first-team all-conference player for the Wolves from 1985-88, began coaching at WOU in 1989, became the defensive coordinator in 1997 and the head coach in 2005. His 103 wins is the second most in WOU history, behind only Bill McArthur's 180 wins in 36 seasons.

Tackling is the family business for Liufau, and business is good
WOU two-time all-conference linebacker Malcolm Liufau has racked up 113 tackles on game into his third season with the Wolves - including a team-best 66 in 2023. Tackling is in the bloodline as he's the younger brother of Dallas Cowboys rookie and former Notre Dame linebacker Marist Liufau.

Wolves picked eighth in Lone Star Conference
The Western Oregon football team was tabbed to finish eighth when the Lone Star Conference Football Preseason Poll. The preseason poll is voted on by LSC head coaches, sports information directors and media members. WOU finished 3-8 overall in 2023 and 2-6 in LSC play - tied for sixth in the conference.
