SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. --- As Western Oregon's
Dominique Loggins broke free for a game-tying 44-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, it was clear that the Wolves were giving NCAA Division-I FCS Cal Poly all it could handle.
Unfortunately for WOU, that was its last score of the game as the Mustangs scored the final 17 points to beat the Wolves 31-14 on Saturday at Mustang Memorial Field at Spanos Stadium.
WOU (0-2) trailed 14-0 midway through the second quarter before getting its first scoring drive of the game rolling. A key play on the drive came on third and 16 when
Kainoa Jones hit
Brenden Hodge for a 47-yard pass down the right side to put the Wolves in Cal Poly (1-2) territory on its 14.
Six plays later, Loggins went through the right side of the line for a 5-yard touchdown run to make it 14-6 with 2:20 left in the first half (WOU missed the extra point).Â
WOU stopped the Mustangs before the end of the first half to keep the score at 14-6 before the defense again stepped up to start the third quarter - getting a three-and-out and the Wolves possession.
Again, Jones came through for WOU not on one, but two key third-down plays. Facing third-and-5 on their own 23, Jones hit
Keyvaun Eady right in stride for a 20-yard gain to the WOU 43. Three plays later facing third-and-9, Jones used his legs to break free for a 12-yard scamper and a first down. On the next play, Loggins broke free for the 44-yard touchdown run. Jones then hit
London Smalley for the two-point conversion to make it 14-14 with 11:07 left on the clock.
But the Mustangs went on to hold WOU scoreless the rest of the game while scoring 17 unanswered points to make the final 31-14.
The Wolves outgained Cal Poly 386-315 with throwing for 238 yards while rushing for 148. WOU also owned the time of possession battle by more than 11 minutes, but penalties hurt the Wolves as they were penalized 12 times for 101 yards (the Mustangs were penalized three times for 28 yards).
Jones finished 16-for-27 for 224 yards and an interception.
Damon Hickok was the team's leading receiver with five catches for 99 yards while
Brenden Hodge had four catches for 64 yards and
Kade Hustler finished with three receptions for 36 yards.
Loggins led the ground game, rushing for 100 yards and two scores on 18 carries (5.6 yards per carry). He's the first Wolves player in WOU's NCAA-era (since 2001) to rush for 100 yards against a Division-I opponent.
Defensively,
Andrew Simpson led WOU with four tackles, a pass breakup and a tackle for a loss while
Aden Murphy also had four tackles and a tackle for a loss.
JJ Tofaeono had three tackles and a sack while LJ IMo had two tackles and a forced fumble.
The Wolves open Lone Star Conference action next Saturday at Sul Ross State.
