SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- The Western Oregon volleyball team had its best win streak to start a season since 1998 snapped at seven games as the Wolves defeated Westmont College 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-17) before falling to host Cal State San Marcos 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 16-25, 25-15, 15-9) on Saturday at The Sports Center.
In the first match, the Wolves (7-1 overall) cruised by the Warriors (5-2) in three behind 12 kills from
Bailee Hartsook and 10 more from
Madison Hornback.
Samantha Darby had a team-high 23 assists while
Chloe Asciutto had six kills, five aces and three blocks. As a team, the Wolves had 17 aces
In the second match, WOU jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the match before dropping the next two to the Cougars (2-5) for its first loss of the season. It was a match of momentum as no game finished closer than four points.
Hornback had a team-best 17 kills while Hartsook added 16 and
Kilinoelehua Helm had 10. Hornback added 10 digs while Darby tied for the team-lead with 11 digs to go along with a WOU-best 31 assists (
Kealani Rosa added 24 while
Sidney Friesen also had 11 digs).
In terms of tournament awards, Ascuitto was named Cougar Classic Tournament MVP while Hartsook, Hornback, Helm and
Maela Honma were named to the Cougar Classic All-Tournament Team as well.
The Wolves now get set to start conference play with their home opener 7 p.m. Thursday against Central Washington.
