SEASIDE, Calif. --- The Western Oregon baseball team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in opening night of the 2025 season, but fell on the road to No. 13 Cal State Monterey Bay, 4-3, Friday in game one of its four-game series at the Otter Sports Complex.
The Wolves (0-1 overall) got off to a quick start in the first, with both
Owen Bischoff and
Ruban Cedillo reaching on singles before
Randy Stultz singled to left center, bring home Bischoff for the Wolves first run on the 2025 campaign. One pitch later, Cedillo scored on a sacrifice fly by
John Oleson to put WOU ahead 2-0. On the next at-bat,
Collin Irwin lined a double down the left-field line, scoring Stultz and quickly putting the Wolves out front of the Otters, 3-0.
The Otters (1-0) answered back, scoring one in the second and two in the fourth to tie the game, 3-3. In the fifth, CSUMB scored the game's final run, taking the lead and the game, 4-3.
Irwin went 2-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk while Bischoff ended 2-for-3, adding a stolen base and a run scored. Both Stultz and Cedillo finished 1-for-4 with a run scored, with Stultz adding an RBI.Â
Bryce Bond started on the mound for the Wolves, giving up three runs (one earned) on four hits and striking out four in three innings of work.Â
Shane Bailey got the loss for the Wolves in relief, giving up an earned run and two hits while striking out three in five innings.
The Wolves are back in action at Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday, taking the field for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
