MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon women's basketball team went on a 10-2 run late in the fourth quarter to take the lead for good and held off Simon Fraser 67-64 Saturday at New PE Building.
It's the first win for the Wolves (6-6 overall, 2-2 GNAC) over the Red Leafs (9-4, 2-2) since 2019 and the first win over SFU in Monmouth since 2015.
In the fourth quarter, WOU trailed 55-53 after a pair of SFU free throws before a bucket by
Selai Niu at the 4:23 mark tied it at 55 and ignited the Wolves' run.
Ciona Wells followed with a bucket in the paint before a steal by Niu led to a
Mya India Thomas 3-pointer that made it 60-55 with 2:34 remaining.Â
After a Red Leaf bucket cut the WOU lead to three, WOU connected on a trio of free throws - the last two coming from
Bella Pedrojetti with 33 seconds left - to make it 63-57. While WOU went 4-for-4 at the line the rest of the way, SFU did get a game-tying 3-pointer attempt off at the buzzer - but it was off the mark and the Wolves picked up the win.
WOU, which led 24 of the 40 minutes of the contest, forced a season-high 25 turnovers and outscored SFU 28-20 on points off turnovers as well as holding SFU to six second-chance points.
