Wolves rally in second half to beat Eastern New Mexico on the road, 21-18

PORTALES, N.M. --- The Western Oregon football team overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit to beat Eastern New Mexico 21-18 on Saturday at Al Whitehead Field.

The Wolves (4-2 overall, 3-1 LSC) took the opening drive of the second half and drove and drove 75 yards on eight plays capped by a Jordan McCarty 5-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 10-7 with 11:41 remaining in the third.

The score remained that way until the Wolves put together another scoring drive late in the third quarter that bled into the fourth - a 12-play, 91-yard drive that was capped by a Carson Workman 1-yard run to make it 14-10 WOU.

The WOU defense stepped up and got a stop on 4th-and-1 on the ENMU 47 to turn the ball over on downs. The Wolves then ran the ball six straight times to score - with a Jermaine Land 16-yard run followed by a McCarty 11-yard touchdown run to end the drive - to give WOU a 21-10 lead with 4:56 remaining in the contest.

ENMU (1-5, 1-3) answered with a touchdown drive and a two-point conversion to make it 21-18 with 1:22 left - but the Greyhounds' onside kick attempt was unsuccessful and the Wolves held on for the win.

The Wolves were outgained by ENMU 315-288 overall, though WOU did rush for 229 yards - including 5.6 yards per carry. McCarty led the team with 120 rushing yards and two scores to go along with 59 yards passing. Land added 78 yards on the ground. Cody Hall led the team with two catches for 33 yards.

Defensively, Malcolm Liufau led WOU with nine tackles - including a half sack. Elijah Pula had eight tackles while Malik Ross finished with seven.

The Wolves return home next Saturday for homecoming as they host Texas Permian Basin.
