BURNABY, B.C. --- The Western Oregon women's soccer team fell in the GNAC Championships semifinal to Simon Fraser 1-0 on Thursday night at SFU Stadium at Terry Fox Field.
The Wolves, 11-4-5 overall this season, will now wait to see if they make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history when the 56-team field is announced 3:30 p.m. (PT) Sunday at NCAA.com.
Seven teams from the West Region will make the NCAA postseason - WOU entered the week ranked fifth. SFU is No. 3 in the region and Western Washington is at No. 2. The Vikings needed a last second-goal in regulation and a goal in overtime to beat Seattle Pacific (ranked 9th), 2-1 Thursday to advance to the finals to face the Red Leafs.
As for WOU's matchup Thursday, the Wolves outshot SFU (13-2-4) 13-7, including 4-3 on shots on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net against the Red Leafs. SFU's goal came in the 36th minute - and despite a strong push in the second half, WOU couldn't connect on the equalizer.
