ARCATA, Calif. --- The Western Oregon women's basketball team led from the first quarter on, led by as much as 16 and held off a late Cal Poly Humboldt run to win its fourth in a row 74-71 on Saturday at Lumberjack Arena.
The Wolves (7-3 overall) trailed 12-11 in the first quarter before a 3-pointer from
Ciona Wells with 4:12 remaining in the period gave the Wolves the lead for what turned out to be for good.
WOU's advantage on the Lumberjacks (3-4) grew to 16 points late in the second quarter after a
Kylani Rookstool layup following a Wells steal as the Wolves went into the half with a 42-28 lead.
WOU still led by 14 points early in the fourth quarter before CPH chipped away, getting to within a point at 72-71 with 14 seconds left. However, Rookstool drained a pair of free throws with eight seconds left to bolster the lead and the Wolves hung on for the victory.
Rookstool had a game-high 26 points - going 8-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-6 from 3-point range - to go along with a team-high eight rebounds.
Triniti Youngblood added 17 points, four rebounds and three assists while
Salma Youngblood had nine points and three rebounds.
WOU returns to action next Saturday with an exhibition game for the Wolves at Idaho.
