MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team got a stellar start from
Devin Bell in game one to defeat Central Washington 6-0 before dropping game two 9-5 Saturday at WOU Baseball Field.
The Wolves (10-21 overall, 7-15 GNAC) used a six-run second inning in the opener - a two-run single by Calving Tenorio, a bases-loaded walk to
Zane Garvey, a two-run single from
Owen Bischoff and an RBI single from
John Oleson - to jump out to an early advantage on the Wildcats (19-16, 12-10).
It was more than enough for Bell who went eight innings and gave up no runs on three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks - including giving up just one hit over his final seven innings of work.
Chris Jones tossed a scoreless ninth to finish the game.
The freshman shortstop Garvey went 2-for-2 with an RBI and three walks, Tenorio finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run and Oleson was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.
In the second game, CWU hit a three-run homer in the first to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish - eventually building a 9-1 lead before a three-run fifth by the Wolves and a run in the seventh made the final 9-5.
Garvey went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run,
Collin Irwin drove in two runs,
Cedric Gatter went 1-for-2 with two runs and Bischoff went 1-for-2 with a double, RBI, two walks and a stolen base.
The teams close out the series with a doubleheader noon Sunday in Monmouth.
