LACEY, Wash. --- The Western Oregon baseball team got a 13-strikeout, two-hitter from
Devin Bell in a 5-1 game one win before dropping game two 10-5 to Saint Martin's on Thursday at Saints Field.
It's the second time this season Bell has struck out 13 batters this season - becoming the first pitcher in WOU history to strike out 13 or more batters twice in a career, never mind a season. Bell surrendered just one unearned run in the first inning and at one point retired 16-straight Saints, 10 via strikeout.
The Wolves (16-26, 12-18) rallied from the early 1-0 deficit in game one in the second when
Trey Nelson hit an RBI single followed by an RBI double from
Ruben Cedillo. WOU added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh to pull away for the win.
Cedillo finished 2-for-4 with double, triple, RBI and run while
Owen Bischoff went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
However in game two, the Saints (3-45, 3-27) again jumped out on top in the first - this time with two runs and stayed ahead for good. The Wolves cut the lead to 2-1 with a
John Oleson RBI single in the third, but SMU scored three in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 10-1 lead. WOU scored four in the seventh, but it wasn't enough.
Oleson finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run to lead the Wolves.
Jacob Memmott got the loss, going three innings and giving up eight runs (five earned) on eight hits.
The loss coupled with a Central Washington 6-4 win in 14 innings over MSU Billings on Thursday has eliminated the Wolves from GNAC Championships contention as WOU can only tie CWU in the standings and the Wildcats own the head-to-head tiebreaker by beating WOU six out of eight times this season.
WOU closes out its season against Saint Martin's with a doubleheader starting at noon Friday.
