MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's soccer team battled No. 3 CSU Pueblo to a 0-0 scoreless - and physical - draw Thursday at WOU Soccer Field.
In a rematch of an NCAA Tournament contest last season where the Thunderwolves (2-0-3) edged the Wolves (2-1-1) 3-2 with a goal in the final minutes, WOU and CSUP again played a tight match - each taking eight shots, both having four on goal. Even corner kicks (5-3 WOU) and fouls (16-14 CSUP) were close.
The Wolves had a shot to take the lead in the first half when WOU was fouled in the penalty area. However, CSUP keeper Esteban Gonzalez made the save on the penalty kick to keep the match scoreless.
It was a back-and-forth match throughout, with possession percentage even being close (WOU 53 percent, CSUP 47 percent).
Justin Stewart picked up four saves for the Wolves in picking up the clean sheet.
WOU returns to action 1 p.m. Saturday when it takes on Cal Poly Humboldt.
