MONMOUTH, Ore. --- Since 2009, the Western Oregon women's soccer team had played four matches against teams ranked No. 1 in the country - and had been outscored by 17-0 in those games.
That all changed in a dramatic way Thursday.
The Wolves used two goals in the final 25 minutes to rally against No. 1 Colorado School of Mines for a 2-1 win at WOU Soccer Field - marking the program's first win over a national No. 1.
WOU (3-1-1 overall) and the Orediggers (3-1) played a scoreless first half before CSM scored just four minutes into the second half to take the lead.
The score remained that way until the 67th minute when a bouncing ball just outside the penalty area was one-timed by
Lauren Rose and she put it on a line into the top-left corner to even the score at 1-1.
The Wolves took the lead in the 73rd minute when
Kaitlin Taylor dribbled down the left side and lofted a ball with her left foot over the keeper and into the right side of the net to make it 2-1 - the way the game would end.
WOU outshot CSM 14-9 - including 6-2 on shots on goal.
The Wolves open GNAC play next Thursday at Montana State Billings.
