MONMOUTH --- The No. 22 Western Oregon men's soccer team had its chances, but dropped its season opener to University of California Merced 1-0 on Saturday at WOU Soccer Field.
The Wolves (0-1) outshot UCM (1-0) 13-8 in the match - including ripping off 10 shots in the first half - but none found the back of the net.
Michael Divano had a team-high four shots (one on goal) while
Alex Grignon had a pair of shots on goal. Justin Steward started at keeper and had four saves for the Wolves.
WOU returns to action Monday at home when it hosts Hawaii Hilo.
