IRVINE, Calif. — The Western Oregon softball team opened its season Friday at the CUI Kickoff Classic by splitting a doubleheader at the Great Park Softball Complex, defeating Menlo 4–2 before falling to Biola 10–2.
The Wolves (1-1) struck first in the opener, scoring two runs in the first inning on a Lexi Baumgartner two-run double before adding two more in the sixth on a Sydney Conklin two-run double to secure the win.
Kennedy Abbas earned the victory in the circle, allowing no runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout over five innings. Braeli Martin recorded the save, striking out the only batter she faced to close out the game.
In the second game, Biola jumped ahead early and went on to a 10–2 win. The Wolves scored both of their runs in the third inning when Lauren Mauer singled to left to drive in a pair.
Mauer finished with two RBI, while Madelynne Hommel and Charliann Renner each added a hit in the loss. Penny-Lew Barnett took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits with one walk and one strikeout over two innings.
The Wolves return to action Saturday when they face CSU Dominguez Hills at 8 a.m. and Vanguard at 4 p.m. on the second day of the CUI Kickoff Classic.
