WICHITA FALLS, Tex.--Midwestern State rode the arm of Kaden Brown for a 44-32 win over visiting Western Oregon on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.
Brown, the leading passer in the Lone Star Conference, threw for 426 yards (30-for-42) and four touchdowns, including one with just three and a half minutes remaining to seal the win for the Mustangs. Midwestern State remains tied for first place in the Lone Star with a 3-0 record and they are 4-1 overall.
Western Oregon dips to 0-3 in league play and 2-3 on the season.
In a game where both teams combined for 1,029 total yards, the two squads traded points in the first half.
Jordan McCarty ran for a five-yard score in the first quarter,
LJ Imo scampered in from four yards out early in the second and McCarty found
Erick Gonzalez-Bejar for a 57-yard catch and run early in the second.
Kadyn Butcher drilled a 45-yard field goal with 48 seconds left in the half, but in each of the Wolves scores mention previously, they were answering Mustang touchdowns
The Wolves and Mustangs were tied at 7-7, 14-14, and 21-21 but MSU went into the halftime locker room up 28-24.
The defense picked up in the second half. Midwestern State kept the Wolves off the scoreboard in the third quarter and Brown tossed one of his four TD's to give the home team a 35-24 lead.
The battled back early in the fourth (12:44) when McCarty hit
Jaylen Fite with a 46-year scoring strike to make it 35-32.  But MSU would pull away with a field goal and another touchdown pass from Brown to seal the verdict.
McCarty finished with 247 passing yards (18-for-38) with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Gonzalez-Bejar caught four of those throws for 78 yards and a score, and Fite also had four catches for 73 yards and a touchdown. McCarty also rushed for six points.Â
Carson Workman led the Wolves ground game with 52 yards, while Andrew Soler paced the defense with 13 total tackles. David Moore, Jr. had an interception.Â
The Wolves finished with 417 yards of total offense and the Mustangs had 612. MSU had a slight edge in first downs (28-24).
Western Oregon will return home next Saturday (Oct. 10) to face Texas A&M -Kingsville. Start time at McArthur Field is 1:05.
