TURLOCK, Calif. — The Western Oregon baseball team swept a doubleheader from Stanislaus State on Saturday, taking a 5-1 win in the opener before edging the Warriors 3-2 in the nightcap at Warrior Baseball.
With the two victories, WOU improved to 5-6 overall while Stanislaus State moved to 8-5.
Game 1 — Western Oregon 5, Stanislaus State 1
The Wolves used timely power and a dominant start on the mound to take control of the opener.
Chris Arce provided the big swing in the fifth inning, launching a two-run home run to push WOU's lead to 3-0. Arce finished 2-for-5 with a homer, a triple and two RBI.
Western Oregon added insurance in the ninth. After Alex Angevine walked and Jason Olsen singled, Collin Irwin drove in a run with a groundout before Arce ripped an RBI triple to extend the lead to 5-1.
Shane Bailey (1-2) delivered one of his strongest outings of the season, tossing 8.0 innings and allowing three hits and one run with seven strikeouts and one walk. Zane Garvey worked a clean ninth to close it out.
Game 2 — Western Oregon 3, Stanislaus State 2
The nightcap required grit.
Gunnar Shiotani opened the scoring in the second with an RBI single to give WOU a 1-0 lead. The Wolves added another in the sixth when Zane Garvey singled and later scored on an RBI base hit from Alex Harden.
Stanislaus State tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, but Western Oregon answered immediately.
In the seventh, Jason Olsen was hit by a pitch, moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Finn O'Connor and came home on a sacrifice fly from Arce to put the Wolves back in front, 3-2.
Wyatt Rosales started and went 5.1 innings, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) with four strikeouts and no walks. Hunter Lutman (1-0) earned the win in relief, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings with one strikeout and one walk to close it out.
The two teams meet in the finale at 12 p.m. Sunday.
