Wolves take Sunday's series finale at Stanislaus State to take three of four from Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif. — The Western Oregon baseball team closed out its weekend in winning fashion Sunday, defeating Stanislaus State 6-3 to secure three wins in the four-game series.

With the victory, WOU improved to 6-6 on the season, while Stanislaus State moved to 8-6 .

Western Oregon struck first in the second inning. After a pair of hit batters and a sacrifice bunt, Alex Angevine delivered a sacrifice fly to score Alex Harden for a 1-0 lead. The Wolves broke the game open in the third, plating three runs to take a 4-0 advantage. Chris Arce and Tyler Mohler each singled to set the table, and Angevine capped the inning with a two-run double down the left-field line.

Stanislaus State answered with single runs in the third and fourth innings to trim the deficit to 4-2, but Western Oregon's bullpen kept the Warriors from gaining further momentum.

Alex Harden provided a key insurance run in the eighth, blasting a solo home run to left field to push the lead to 5-2. Later in the frame, Angevine reached on an error that allowed Jason Olsen to score, extending the advantage to 6-2.

On the mound, Logan Larrance earned the win, tossing 3.0 shutout innings while allowing two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Josh Johnson started and worked 4.0 innings, surrendering two runs (both earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks .

After Stanislaus State homered in the eighth to make it 6-3, Zane Garvey closed the door in the ninth, retiring the side in order and striking out one to earn his first save of the season.

Offensively, Western Oregon tallied six runs on six hits. Angevine finished with a double and three RBI, while Harden added a home run and two runs scored.

Western Oregon opens GNAC play Friday at Northwest Nazarene.
