Wolves sweep home-opening doubleheader over Bushnell on Saturday

MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Western Oregon softball team swept a Saturday doubleheader from Bushnell, rallying for a 7-5 win in the opener before holding on for a 4-3 victory in Game 2 at the WOU Softball Field.

With the two wins, WOU improved to 6-6 overall while Bushnell fell to 2-8.

Game 1 — Western Oregon 7, Bushnell 5

The Wolves erased a three-run deficit with a three-run fourth inning and broke the game open with four runs in the sixth to secure the opener.

Trailing 3-0 after three innings, WOU answered in the fourth. Brooklyn Schneidt delivered a two-RBI single up the middle, and Victoria Zimmerman followed with an RBI triple to tie the game at 3-3.

Western Oregon capitalized on Bushnell miscues in the sixth, scoring four runs — three unearned — highlighted by RBI from Haley Homan, Madelynne Hommel, Lexi Baumgartner and Gracie Nelson.

Alyssa Fullmer (1-0) earned the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing three hits and two runs with three walks and two strikeouts .

Braeli Martin recorded her second save of the season, entering with two outs in the seventh and inducing the final out to secure the 7-5 victory .

Game 2 — Western Oregon 4, Bushnell 3

Game 2 belonged to freshman right-hander Martin.

Martin struck out 14 batters — tied for the third-most in Western Oregon single-game history — while tossing a complete game in the circle. She allowed nine hits and three runs with two walks in the win .

She didn't just dominate in the circle. Martin also provided the early spark at the plate, launching a two-run home run to center field in the first inning to give WOU a 2-0 lead .

Homan added an RBI single in the second, and the Wolves pushed across the decisive run in the sixth after Schneidt reached and later scored on a Bushnell throwing error.

Bushnell tied the game at 3-3 in the third, but Martin settled in from there, striking out seven batters over the final four innings to close the door.

Martin improved to 2-2 on the season with the victory .

The Wolves return to action Friday when they open play at the GNAC/CCAA Crossover in Tracy, California.
