Wolves split opening day at NorCal Crossover on Friday

TRACY, Calif. — The Western Oregon softball team split a pair of games Friday at the NorCal Crossover, defeating CSU San Bernardino 8-0 in five innings before falling 3-1 to Chico State.

Western Oregon moved to 7-7 overall with the split.


Game 1: Western Oregon 8, CSU San Bernardino 0 (5 inn.)

Western Oregon (7-6) used a six-run fifth inning to secure the run-rule win over CSU San Bernardino (6-7).

Haley Homan led the Wolves at the plate, going 3 for 4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Madelynne Hommel doubled and drove in a run, Sydney Conklin recorded two RBI, and Reghann Fairbairn added two RBI. Brooklyn Schneidt also finished with an RBI as WOU totaled 10 hits.

Kennedy Abbas (2-0) earned the win in relief, pitching 3.2 innings and allowing three hits with no runs, four strikeouts and two walks. Abby Stansbury started and threw 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with three walks and one strikeout.


Game 2: Chico State 3, Western Oregon 1

Chico State (4-5) handed the Wolves (7-7) a 3-1 loss in the afternoon game despite Western Oregon out-hitting the Wildcats 9-4.

Madelynne Hommel went 3 for 4 with an RBI to lead WOU offensively. Brooklyn Schneidt recorded two hits, and Haley Homan scored the Wolves' lone run.

Penny-Lew Barnett (1-4) took the loss, pitching four innings and allowing two runs (0 earned) on two hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Braeli Martin worked two innings in relief, giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout and two walks.

Western Oregon continues action at the NorCal Crossover on Saturday, facing CSU San Marcos at noon and CSU Monterey Bay at 2:30 p.m.
