Wolves drop both ends of Saturday doubleheader at Northwest Nazarene

NAMPA, Idaho — The Western Oregon baseball team dropped both games of a GNAC doubleheader Saturday at Northwest Nazarene, falling 11-2 in the opener and 13-2 in the nightcap at Elmore Vail Field.

Game 1: Northwest Nazarene 11, Western Oregon 2

Zane Garvey gave the Wolves an early spark with a solo homer to lead off the game. Alex Harden drove in a run in the fifth to trim the deficit to 4-2 before the Nighthawks answered with a five-run fifth inning to pull away.

Zane Garvey paced WOU offensively, going 3 for 4 with a home run and scoring both runs. Chris Arce added two hits, including a double, and Harden finished 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Josh Johnson (0-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs (four earned) on five hits over 4 1/3 innings with three walks.

Game 2: Northwest Nazarene 13, Western Oregon 2

WOU struck first in the second game, scoring twice in the third inning thanks to a two-run double by Benny Nazario delivered.

Northwest Nazarene responded with three runs in the bottom of the third and broke the game open with a five-run fourth inning. The Nighthawks added four more runs over the final two frames.

Jason Olsen and Arce had two hits apiece to lead the Wolves.

Shane Bailey (1-3) was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs on six hits over 3 1/3 innings with one strikeout.

Western Oregon returns home next Saturday for its home opener against Central Washington.
