MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Western Oregon baseball team split a doubleheader with Central Washington on Saturday at WOU Baseball Field, earning an 8-4 victory in the opener before falling 4-1 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Western Oregon 8, Central Washington 4
Western Oregon broke open the opener with a three-run second inning and added insurance late to secure the win over Central Washington.
The Wolves jumped ahead when Alex Angevine launched a two-run home run down the left-field line, scoring Jason Olsen to give WOU a 2-0 lead. Collin Irwin later scored on a Zane Garvey RBI single in the inning to extend the advantage to 3-0.
Central Washington cut the deficit to 4-2 in the fifth, but the Wolves answered in the sixth. Garvey delivered again with a two-run double to center field, bringing home Finn O'Connor and Benny Nazario to push the lead to 6-2.
WOU added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings, including an RBI from Irwin and a run-scoring single by Tyler Mohler, to build an 8-2 advantage before the Wildcats plated two runs in the ninth.
Garvey finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Angevine went 1-for-4 with the two-run homer. O'Connor added two hits and scored twice for the Wolves.
Ayden Holker (2-1) earned the win for Western Oregon, allowing six hits and two runs over six innings with seven strikeouts and two walks. Hunter Lutman recorded the save, pitching the final three innings while allowing two runs on two hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
Game 2: Central Washington 4, Western Oregon 1
Central Washington (4-13) used a three-run sixth inning to pull away in the second game and even the doubleheader against Western Oregon (8-11).
The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a solo home run from Jake Lockwood.
Western Oregon tied the game in the fifth when Benny Nazario delivered an RBI single to score Olsen.
Central Washington responded in the sixth with three runs and the Wolves couldn't find the answer.
Nazario went 1-for-3 with the RBI, while Alex Harden and Gunnar Shiotani each added a hit.
Wyatt Rosales started for Western Oregon, allowing one run on four hits over 4 2/3 innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Max Holden (0-2) took the loss, surrendering three runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings with one strikeout and one walk.
WOU and CWU close out the series with a doubleheader starting at noon Sunday in Monmouth.
