MONMOUTH, Ore. — The Western Oregon baseball team used a fast start to secure a split of a Sunday doubleheader with Central Washington, winning game two 10-4 after dropping the opener 4-3 at WOU Baseball Field.
Game 2 – Western Oregon 10, Central Washington 4
Western Oregon jumped in front early and never trailed in the second game, scoring twice in the first inning and adding three more in the second to build momentum toward the split.
Zane Garvey and Chris Arce each collected two hits and scored twice to pace the Wolves offensively. Arce also doubled and drove in a run, while Garvey added an RBI and a stolen base.
The biggest swing came from Alex Harden, who launched a three-run home run. Benny Nazario added two hits and an RBI, Jason Olsen scored twice with a pair of hits, and Darin Chapman, Collin Irwin and Finn O'Connor each drove in a run.
Shane Bailey earned the win for WOU, pitching 5.1 innings while allowing nine hits and four runs with two strikeouts.
Game 1 – Central Washington 4, Western Oregon 3
Central Washington built an early lead and held off a late Wolves rally to take the opener.
The Wildcats scored single runs in the first and second innings before adding two more in the fifth to move ahead 4-0.
Western Oregon chipped away with two runs in the sixth and another in the eighth to pull within one - but couldn't complete the comeback.
Olsen drove in two runs and Nazario added an RBI for the Wolves. Garvey finished with two hits and scored a run, while Harden also recorded two hits and Irwin added a single.
Josh Johnson took the loss for WOU after allowing four runs over 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and three walks.
Western Oregon returns to action Tuesday when the Wolves travel to face George Fox in Newberg.
