LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. — The Western Oregon softball team split a pair of games Friday at the Lake Elsinore Invitational, falling 8-6 to Stanislaus State before rebounding with a 13–7 win over Cal Poly Humboldt.
Game 1 — Stanislaus State 8, Western Oregon 6
Western Oregon jumped out early, scoring four runs in the first inning and building a 6–2 lead through three frames, but Stanislaus State used a four-run fifth and a two-run sixth to rally past the Wolves.
Madelynne Hommel went 2-for-3 with a run, while Lexi Baumgartner drove in two runs and Brooklyn Schneidt added a 2-for-3 performance with a run scored. Reghann Fairbairn and Emma Cordero each recorded an RBI.
Stanislaus State erased the deficit with unearned runs in the fifth before taking the lead for good in the sixth. Braeli Martin took the loss in relief.
Game 2 — Western Oregon 13, Cal Poly Humboldt 7
The Wolves answered in the nightcap with a 15-hit offensive outburst, scoring in six different innings to pull away from Cal Poly Humboldt.
Haley Homan finished a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs scored and an RBI, while Lauren Mauer went 2-for-2 with a home run, four RBI and two walks. Lexi Baumgartner added three RBI, Madelynne Hommel went 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Hope Bodak drove in a run and doubled.
Penny-Lew Barnett earned the win in relief, throwing four scoreless innings with four strikeouts after Western Oregon regained the lead in the fourth inning and broke the game open with a five-run sixth.
WOU returns to action Saturday against Western New Mexico and CU Irvine.
