Wolves rally to beat WNMU, fall to CUI on Saturday at D2 West Collegiate Classic

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. — The Western Oregon softball team split a pair of games Saturday at the D2 West Collegiate Classic, rallying past Western New Mexico 8–6 before falling 2–1 to Concordia Irvine at Rosetta Canyon Park.

Game 1: Western Oregon 8, Western New Mexico 6

The Wolves bounced back with an eight-run effort to secure the opener against Western New Mexico. After falling behind in the fifth inning, WOU answered with runs in each of the final four frames, highlighted by a four-run seventh inning.

Lauren Mauer went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Emma Cordero was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Lexi Baumgartner added a triple and an RBI, and Sydney Conklin drove in a run as part of the late surge. Brooklyn Schneidt also recorded an RBI, and Reghann Fairbairn added one more to round out the scoring.

In the circle, Abby Stansbury earned the win, tossing 2.2 innings in relief and allowing four hits, two runs, one walk and one strikeout. Kennedy Abbas started for WOU and worked 4.1 innings, giving up five hits and four runs, one of which was earned, with three strikeouts.

Game 2: Concordia Irvine 2, Western Oregon 1

Western Oregon was edged in a tight pitchers' duel against Concordia Irvine, with the Eagles scoring twice in the fifth inning to overturn an early WOU lead.

The Wolves plated their lone run in the first inning when Mauer drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Haley Homan. Mauer finished with a triple, while Homan and Madelynne Hommel each recorded a hit.

Alyssa Fullmer started in the circle for Western Oregon and threw four innings, allowing two hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts and two walks. Penny-Lew Barnett took the loss in relief, pitching three innings and giving up two hits and one unearned run with three strikeouts and four walks.

Western Oregon closes out action at the D2 West Collegiate Classic on Sunday, facing Regis at 9:30 a.m.
