Wolves drop NorCal finale to Stanislaus State on Sunday

TRACY, Calif. — The Western Oregon softball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Stanislaus State on Sunday during the final day of the NorCal Crossover at the Tracy Sports Complex.

Stanislaus State (11-5) struck for all three of its runs in the bottom of the first, using three hits, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to take a quick 3-0 lead. Western Oregon (7-10) settled in from there, but the early deficit held up.

The Wolves broke through in the sixth. Morgan Voll opened the inning with a double down the right-field line and moved to third on a wild pitch. Brooklyn Schneidt followed with a single up the middle to plate Voll and cut the deficit to 3-1.

Western Oregon threatened again in the seventh after Lauren Mauer was hit by a pitch and Voll singled to put two aboard with two outs - but the Warriors were able to get out of the jam and close the game.

Voll led WOU at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored. Schneidt finished 1 for 3 with the Wolves' lone RBI. Madelynne Hommel, Lexi Baumgartner, Lauren Mauer and Braeli Martin each added a hit as Western Oregon totaled seven.

Penny-Lew Barnett (1-5) took the loss, allowing seven hits and three runs over 4.0 innings with two walks and one strikeout. Kennedy Abbas tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in relief, striking out two and allowing no hits.

Hommel and Baumgartner were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Western Oregon returns to action Friday at home against Simon Fraser in non-GNAC play.
