BELLINGHAM, Wash. — The Western Oregon softball team earned a non-conference doubleheader sweep Friday at Western Washington, rallying for a 6-4 win in the opener before pulling away for an 8-3 victory in Game 2 at Viking Field.
Game 1 — Western Oregon 6, Western Washington 4
Western Oregon (13-10 overall) erased an early three-run deficit with a four-run fourth inning and added insurance late to secure the opener.
Western Washington jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Wolves answered in the fourth. Madelynne Hommel doubled to start the rally before Lauren Mauer lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home the first run. Lexi Baumgartner followed with an RBI single, and Brooklyn Schneidt delivered the big hit of the inning with a two-run double to give WOU a 4-3 advantage.
The Wolves extended the lead in the sixth. Sydney Conklin doubled to lead off the frame and later scored when Schneidt reached on a throwing error, bringing home two runs to push the advantage to 6-3.
Western Washington (13-10) scored once in the sixth, but WOU pitcher Abby Stansbury closed the door in the seventh to secure the win.
Stansbury earned the victory in the circle, tossing a complete game with seven innings pitched, allowing 10 hits and four runs while striking out one and walking four.
Hommel finished 2-for-4 with a double, while Schneidt went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Conklin also had two hits in the win.
Game 2 — Western Oregon 8, Western Washington 3
The Wolves carried the momentum into the second game, using a five-run fourth inning to break the game open.
WOU took an early 1-0 lead in the first when Victoria Zimmerman scored on a wild pitch after reaching base and advancing on a single by Mauer.
The Wolves erupted in the fourth. Haley Homan drove in a run with an infield single before Zimmerman followed with an RBI single. Mauer then cleared the bases with a three-run triple to give Western Oregon a 6-0 lead.
Western Washington trimmed the deficit with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Wolves added single runs in the fifth and sixth. Homan drove in another run in the fifth, and Conklin lifted a sacrifice fly in the sixth to cap the scoring at 8-3.
Penny-Lew Barnett picked up the win, pitching four innings and allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out two and walking three. Kennedy Abbas closed out the game with three scoreless innings of relief, giving up three hits and striking out one.
Mauer led the offense with three hits and three RBI, while Homan added two hits and two RBI. Zimmerman scored twice and drove in a run in the victory.
Western Oregon and Western Washington conclude the non-conference series with another doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon in Bellingham.
