Wolves drop both ends of doubleheader to Eastern Oregon

MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon softball team dropped both games of a home doubleheader to Eastern Oregon on Friday, falling 5-1 in the opener and 3-2 in game two.

Game 1

Eastern Oregon broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the second inning, then added three more in the fourth to pull away for the 5-1 win in the opener. WOU got on the board in the bottom of the second when Madelynne Hommel drew a bases-loaded walk to score Brooklyn Schneidt.

The Wolves finished with five hits. Schneidt went 1-for-3 and scored the lone run, while Lauren Mauer, Reghann Fairbairn, Emma Cordero and Haley Homan each added a hit.

Kennedy Abbas took the loss for WOU after allowing five runs - two earned - on five hits in four innings with three strikeouts and three walks. Abby Stansbury gave the Wolves three scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit with one strikeout and one walk.

Game 2

WOU took an early 1-0 lead in the second game when Sydney Conklin drove in Victoria Zimmerman with a groundout in the first inning. Eastern Oregon tied it in the third, then used a two-run fifth to move in front for good.

The Wolves cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth when Braeli Martin hit a solo home run to left field. Hope Bodak doubled later in the inning, but WOU could not bring home the tying run.

Martin went 1-for-2 with the homer and an RBI, while Hommel and Bodak each doubled. WOU drew seven walks in the game and left eight runners on base.

Penny-Lew Barnett took the loss after allowing three runs - one earned - on three hits in five innings with three strikeouts and three walks. Martin pitched the final two innings and allowed one hit with two strikeouts and two walks.

Western Oregon hosts Montana State Billings next Friday.
