Wolves take two from Saints on Sunday, complete four-game sweep

MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon baseball team completed a four-game series sweep of Saint Martin's with an 11-2 win and a 7-3 victory Sunday at WOU Baseball Field.

WOU (13-16 overall, 6-6 GNAC) controlled the opener from the start, then answered an early deficit in the second game with a four-run first inning and never trailed again against Saint Martin's (9-26, 1-15 GNAC).

Game 1 - Western Oregon 11, Saint Martin's 2

The Wolves broke the first game open with two runs in the second, two more in the third and two in the fourth to build a 6-0 lead.

Collin Irwin opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second before Alex Angevine followed with a sacrifice fly. Alex Harden then delivered a two-run double in the third, Benny Nazario added an RBI single in the fourth and Chris Arce came home later in the inning on an error to make it 6-0.

Harden helped WOU add on again in the fifth with a solo home run, and the Wolves put the game away with three more runs in the seventh. Arce singled in a run, Harden drew an RBI walk and Jason Olsen added an RBI fielder's choice in the frame.

Harden went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBI. Nazario finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Angevine went 2-for-2 with a run, an RBI and two stolen bases. Mohler went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, and Irwin added two hits and an RBI.

Shane Bailey earned the win for WOU, allowing five hits and no runs over 6 innings with one strikeout and three walks.

Game 2 - Western Oregon 7, Saint Martin's 3

Saint Martin's scored in each of the first three innings to pull within 4-3, but Western Oregon answered and kept the Saints off the board the rest of the way.

After Saint Martin's plated an unearned run in the top of the first, the Wolves responded with four runs in the bottom half. Harden tied the game after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, Gunnar Shiotani lifted a sacrifice fly, Chris Arce scored on a wild pitch and Alex Angevine added an RBI single.

WOU extended the lead in the fifth when Arce singled and later scored, and Harden came home on a wild pitch to make it 6-3. The Wolves added their final run in the sixth when Harden singled in Arce.

Arce went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, Harden finished 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored, and Angevine drove in a run. Benny Nazario doubled, and WOU also got RBI from Shiotani and Olsen.

Josh Johnson picked up the win in relief for the Wolves, throwing 2 2/3 innings and allowing two hits and no runs with four strikeouts and two walks.

Western Oregon returns to action Friday when it opens a four-game GNAC series against Northwest Nazarene in Monmouth.
