Wolves take game two to split Friday doubleheader at Simon Fraser

BURNABY, B.C. — The Western Oregon softball team split a GNAC doubleheader with Simon Fraser on Friday, rallying for a 7-3 win in game two after dropping the opener 2-0 at Beedie Field.

WOU moved to 21-16 overall and 7-3 in conference play following the split, while Simon Fraser sits at 12-24, 10-4 GNAC.


WOU 7, Simon Fraser 3 (Game 2)

Western Oregon broke open a tight game late, scoring five runs over the final two innings to pull away for the win.

Lauren Mauer led the Wolves offensively, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple and three RBI. Madelynne Hommel added two hits, while Hope Bodak drove in a run with a pair of hits.

After falling behind 3-0 through three innings, WOU chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth before taking the lead in the sixth. Mauer delivered a game-tying RBI triple, and Lexi Baumgartner followed with an RBI single to put the Wolves in front.

Western Oregon added three insurance runs in the seventh, highlighted by RBIs from Reghann Fairbairn, Mauer and Brooklyn Schneidt.

Penny-Lew Barnett earned the win, allowing seven hits and three runs over 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and one walk. Braeli Martin closed it out with 2.0 scoreless innings, giving up one hit while striking out two.


Simon Fraser 2, WOU 0 (Game 1)

Western Oregon was limited offensively in the opener, managing four hits in the shutout loss.

Hommel recorded two of WOU's four hits, while Mauer and Brooklyn Schneidt added one each.

Kennedy Abbas was solid in the circle despite taking the loss, allowing just three hits and two runs over 6.0 innings with three strikeouts and four walks.

Simon Fraser broke through in the sixth inning with a two-run home run that proved to be the difference.


Western Oregon continues the series against Simon Fraser on Saturday in Burnaby, B.C.
