ELLENSBURG, Wash. — The Western Oregon baseball team rode a big early inning and a balanced offensive attack to a 13-3 win over Central Washington before falling 8-5 in the second game of a GNAC doubleheader Saturday at CWU Baseball Field.
Game 1 — Western Oregon 13, Central Washington 3
WOU broke the game open with a six-run third inning and never looked back, piling up 17 hits in the opener (tying a season high).
Tyler Mohler led the way, going 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs while Chris Arce added three hits and an RBI. Jason Olsen added two hits and two RBI and Robby Shepherd drove in three.
The Wolves scored in five different innings, highlighted by the third where they sent 10 hitters to the plate to take control.
Shane Bailey earned the win, going five innings, allowing six hits and two runs with three strikeouts and one walk. Max Holden closed it out with 4.0 innings, giving up four hits and one run with two strikeouts and one walk for the save.
Game 2 — Central Washington 8, Western Oregon 5
WOU jumped out to a 3-0 lead but couldn't hold off a late surge from Central Washington in the second game.
Mohler provided the early spark with a three-run home run in the fourth inning. Arce added two hits, while Shepherd drove in a run.
After WOU extended the lead to 5-1 in the sixth, Central Washington answered with a seven-run inning to flip the game.
Wyatt Rosales started and went 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts and five walks.
WOU returns to action 2 p.m. Thursday when it opens a five-game series against Montana State Billings.
