MONMOUTH, Ore. - Western Oregon's softball team split a Sunday doubleheader with first-place Saint Martin's at WOU Softball Field, winning the opener 4-2 before dropping the second game 10-1.
Game 1 - Western Oregon 4, Saint Martin's 2
Kennedy Abbas pitched 6.2 strong innings and a Hope Bodak two-run single in the sixth proved to be the difference as Western Oregon took the opener.
Abbas scattered eight hits and allowed two runs - one earned - before Braeli Martin came on to record the final out and earn her fourth save. The win improved Abbas to 7-5 on the season.
Western Oregon scored twice in the first inning to grab an early lead, but Saint Martin's tied it at 2-2 with a run in the second and another in the sixth. Bodak's two-run single in the bottom of the sixth broke the deadlock for good.
Reghann Fairbairn also drove in two runs and reached base four times, drawing two walks to go with her two hits. Victoria Zimmerman and Lauren Mauer each scored twice, with Mauer reaching via hit by pitch both times. Four Saint Martin's errors kept the door open for the Wolves throughout.
Game 2 - Saint Martin's 10, Western Oregon 1
A seven-run second inning put the Wolves in an early hole they couldn't climb out of as Saint Martin's took the nightcap.
Madelynne Hommel had two of WOU's five hits, including a double, Zimmerman had two hits and Lauren Mauer hit a sacrifice to drive in the Wolves' lone run.
WOU plays a key four-game set on the road next week against Northwest Nazarene.
