Wolves fall at NNU, 4-2 and 6-4

NAMPA, Idaho — The Western Oregon softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Northwest Nazarene on Saturday at Halle Field, falling 4-2 and 6-4.

Game 1 - NNU 4, WOU 2

The Wolves jumped out to a two-run lead but couldn't hold on against the Nighthawks.

Madelynne Hommel reached on a walk to lead off the game and scored on a right field error to give WOU a 1-0 edge. The Wolves doubled their advantage in the second when Hope Bodak singled to center, scoring Brooklyn Schneidt.

NNU answered with a run of its own in the bottom half of the second, pulling within one. The Nighthawks tied it in the fourth on an RBI single in the fifth with a pair of runs to put NNU ahead for good.

Penny-Lew Barnett threw two scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit while striking out two.

Game 2 - NNU 6, WOU 4

WOU took a 2-1 lead in the second inning, with Bodak driving in one and Hommel adding another on a fielder's choice.

NNU responded with three runs in the bottom half of the second and never trailed again, pushing the advantage to 6-2 through four innings.

The Wolves made it interesting late, scoring an unearned run in the fifth and another in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Schneidt, but WOU could not complete the comeback.

WOU is now 8-12 in GNAC play with NNU improving to 11-9 and moving into the fourth-and-final spot for the GNAC Championships with a week to go. The Wolves to qualify will need to sweep Western Washington in their four-game home series that starts Friday while NNU will have to drop all four games at home to Central Washington (NNU owns the tiebreaker with WOU so would advance if there was a tie for the last spot).
