Definition of a prospective student-athlete: A prospective student-athlete is an individual who has begun classes for the ninth grade, regardless of their athletic ability. It is possible for younger students to be prospective student-athletes if the institution provides the individual financial assistance or other benefits that are not provided to prospective students generally.

Becoming a Student Athlete
The Western Oregon University athletics staff is excited about the future of our programs and your potential as a student-athlete. The following are steps that must be taken before becoming a part of the Wolves' team.

The first step towards eligibility is to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. Follow the instructions after clicking the link to set up an account and begin the process of being certified as an amateur athlete and academic qualifier.

The Initial Eligibility Requirements must also be followed to become eligible with the NCAA. You should also apply to Western Oregon University early in your senior year and start looking at financial aid options.

Please keep in mind that coaches are limited in how they may contact you by NCAA recruiting guidelines. It is important that you reach out to your prospective coach for information throughout this process.

Transfer to Western Oregon University
If you have not previously registered through NCAA Eligibility Center you must now register, complete the "My Sport" questions, and request your final amateurism certification. As a transfer you are not required to send transcripts and test scores. However, if you choose not to do so, you will be treated as a nonqualifier and will be subject to the more stringent transfer requirements as explained below.

Please Note: If you are a student-athlete enrolled at another four-year institution at any division (Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA), NCAA rules and regulations strictly prohibit WOU from having any communication with you, directly or indirectly, until that institution grants WOU permission to contact you. You may obtain this permission to contact at the compliance office of your current or previous institution

Two College Transfers:
2-4 year College Transfer
14.5.4.1 A transfer student from a two-year college who was a qualifier and who has not previously attended a four-year collegiate institution will be eligible for competition, practice and athletics aid during the first academic year in residence at WOU, provided all of the following are met:
(a) The student-athlete has attended the two-year college as a full-time student for at least one full-time semester or one full-time quarter (excluding summer sessions);
(b) The student-athlete has satisfactorily completed an average of at least 12-quarter hours of transferable credit acceptable toward any baccalaureate degree program at WOU for each full-time academic term of attendance at the two-year college;
(c) The student-athlete has presented a cumulative minimum grade-point average of 2.00.

If a two-year college transfer has never attended a four-year college full-time, then the full-time semester(s)/quarter(s), the transferable degree credit(s) (including part-time hours) and academic degree(s) from any two-year college(s) attended may be considered.

2-4 year or 4-2-4 year College Transfer
14.5.4.2 Eligibility for Competition, Practice and Athletics Aid -- All Other Qualifiers, Partial Qualifiers and Non-qualifiers: A transfer student from a two-year college is eligible for competition, practice and athletics aid during the first academic year in residence at WOU, provided:
(a) The student-athlete has attended the two-year college as a full-time student for at least two semesters or three quarters (excluding summer sessions); and
(b) The student-athlete has satisfied one of the following provisions:
(1) Graduated from the two-year college; or
(2) Satisfactorily completed an average of at least 12-quarter hours of transferable-degree credit acceptable toward any baccalaureate degree program at WOU for each academic term of full-time attendance with a cumulative minimum grade-point average of 2.000
(c) Completion of six-quarter hours of transferrable academic credit the preceding regular academic term in which the student-athlete has been enrolled full-time at any collegiate institution.

Four Year College Transfers:
4-4 College Transfers
14.5.5 Generally, a transfer student from a four-year institution shall not be eligible for intercollegiate competition at WOU until the student has fulfilled a residence requirement of one full academic year (three full quarters) at WOU.
(a) Attendance for One Academic Year: A transfer student from a four-year institution who attended a four-year institution at least one academic year shall be eligible for financial aid and practice at WOU under the rules of the institution and GNAC, of which WOU is a member, regardless of the student's qualification status at the time of initial enrollment.
(b) Attendance for Less Than One Academic Year: A transfer student from a four-year institution who was not a qualifier and who attended a four-year institution less than one full academic year shall not be eligible for competition during the first academic year of attendance at WOU. However, participation in practice sessions and the receipt of financial aid during the first academic year of attendance at WOU is governed by the provisions of Bylaw 14.3.2.1.

Exceptions for Transfers from Four-Year Colleges: There are a number of exceptions to the general transfer rules for a four-year college transfer. The most common exception is the One-Time Transfer Exception, as explained below:

A transfer student from a four-year collegiate institution is not subject to the residence requirement for intercollegiate competition, provided the student does not have an unfulfilled residence requirement at the institution from which he or she is transferring and all of the following conditions are met:
(a) The student has not transferred previously from one four-year institution, unless, in the previous transfer, the student-athlete received an exception per Bylaw 14.5.5.3.6 (discontinued/non-sponsored sport exception) or 14.8.1.2-(d) (residence requirement);

(b) The student is in good academic standing and meets the progress-toward-degree requirements at the previous four-year institution at the time of transfer to WOU. The transferring student must be one who would have been academically eligible had he or she remained at the institution from which the student transferred, and he or she also must be eligible at WOU as a regularly enrolled, full-time, degree-seeking student who was admitted in accordance with the regular, published entrance requirements of the institution;

(c) The student's previous institution certifies in writing that it has no objection to the student's being granted an exception to the transfer residence requirement; and

(d) A student who has one season of competition remaining in his or her sport or two full-time semesters or three full-time quarters remaining in which to complete his or her eligibility and who has not earned a baccalaureate degree, shall have satisfactorily completed an average of 12-semester or 12-quarter hours of transferable degree credit acceptable toward any baccalaureate degree program at the certifying institution for each term of full-time attendance, at any collegiate institution, with a cumulative minimum grade-point average of 2.000.
