Katie Girten enters her sixth season as an assistant coach with the WOU women's basketball program.
Girten joined the Wolves program after serving as the top assistant coach at MiraCosta College in Oceanside, Calif. During her time with the Spartans, Girten held responsibilities in nearly all areas of the program, including helping with individual skill development, organizing practice sessions, analyzing game film, initiating fundraising opportunities and monitoring academic progress of the student-athletes.
In addition to her role at MiraCosta, Girten spent the past year as an assistant coach with Cal-Swish San Diego. While at the youth basketball academy, Girten planned practices and developed skills of high school girls' basketball players in the San Diego area.
Girten also gained coaching experience as a graduate assistant women's basketball coach at Chico State following her playing career with the Wildcats. While at Chico State, Girten helped with individual skill development, strength and conditioning, team management and handled community service activities.
The native of San Diego, Calif., was a standout player for the Wildcats as she helped lead Chico State to the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Sweet 16 as a junior and was named team captain as a senior. She also spent two years at Palomar College in San Marcos, Calif., as she was named San Diego Player of the Year following her sophomore season.
Girten graduated from Chico State with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology and completed her master's degree in coaching and athletic administration at Concordia University-Irvine.
