Box Score MONMOUTH, Ore. - The Western Oregon University women's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with Central Washington, Saturday, Oct. 18.
With the tie the Wolves earned another point in conference as they improved to 1-3-2 in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and 5-7-2 overall. The tie puts the Wildcats at 4-3-1 in the GNAC and 7-4-3 on the season.
Western Oregon got the first goal of the match at the 25:56 mark on a shot by Melinda Ingalls. Ingalls scored the goal, her eighth goal of the season, as she dribbled through the CWU defense, juked a defender then deposited the unassisted shot into the back of the net. This would be the last goal of the half and the match for the Wolves as they took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
WOU held the lead until the 56th minute when Central Washington scored off a corner kick. Amy Pate scored off a pass from Kaycie Hutchins from three yards in front of the goal. A Western Oregon defender jumped in front of the shot and deflected it out from the goal but the shot was ruled to have crossed the plain of the goal line allowing the Wildcats to tie the match at 1-1.
Each team had multiple scoring chances throughout the rest of regulation and both overtimes but neither team could put one in the net as the match ended in a 1-1 tie.
Kelsie Blachly and Brittney Rigtrup split time as goalkeeper for the Wolves. Rigtrup played the entire first half and allowed no goals while collecting one save. Blachly entered the match after halftime and played both overtimes. She registered six saves and just the one goal in 65 minutes of play. Ingalls led the team with five shots as Jessica Hicks and Emily Ingalls added two apiece.
"This matched showed that we can play with anyone in the conference if we are on top of our game," said head coach Rod Fretz. "I felt we controlled the momentum for much of the game but just couldn't get another goal. From a fan's standpoint this was a great match filled with excitement and some very good soccer."
The Western Oregon women's soccer team will be at home next week for two GNAC matches as it faces Montana State Billings Thursday, Oct. 23 at 3:30 p.m., and Northwest Nazarene Saturday, Oct. 25, at noon.
