NAMPA, Idaho - Freshman Melinda Ingalls scored two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Western Oregon University to a 4-1 victory against Northwest Nazarene Thursday, Oct. 2.

The win gave the Wolves their first Great Northwest Athletic Conference victory of the 2008 season as they improved to 1-1-1 in conference and 5-5-1 overall. Western Oregon is now unbeaten in its last three matches with victories over Southern Oregon and NNU and a draw with Saint Martin's.

Brenna Lander scored the first of her two first half goals in the 13th minute as she headed an Ingalls' cross into the net. Her second came on a double assist, as Ingalls passed to Jessica Hicks who then flicked the ball to Lander for the one timer past NNU goalkeeper Pip Herman to give Western Oregon the 2-0 heading into halftime. These were the first two goals of the year for the sophomore Lander.

"We played a solid all-around match today," said head coach Rod Fretz. "We controlled possession and the match tempo throughout the contest."

Western Oregon received a scare to open the second half as NNU got its only goal in the 49th minute to cut the Wolves' lead to 2-1. The score would remain at 2-1 until the 79th minute when Ingalls put the match out of reach as she scored her sixth goal of the season on an unassisted lob shot over the goalie. She would add on another goal in the 84th minute on an assist from Kristen Werhane to give WOU its largest margin of victory of the season.

"We received a tremendous game from Naomi Shimabuku as our back middle defender," said Fretz. "After they (NNU) got their first goal she really stepped up and controlled the middle and did not allow NNU to do anything else offensively the rest of the match."

The Wolves will now travel to face Montana State Billings Saturday Oct. 4, at noon (MT).
