BILLINGS, Mont. - Montana State Billings put up two early goals and tacked on another late to claim a 3-0 victory, over Western Oregon University, Saturday (Oct. 31).
The win snapped a four-match losing skid for MSU Billings (9-8-1, 5-5-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) and dropped Western Oregon to 5-11-3 on the year and 3-8-0 in conference.
The Yellowjackets' Carly Valentine notched the first goal of the match in the 14th minute and Samantha Sandau followed it with another score seven minutes later to give MSU Billings a decisive advantage early. Even with the early goals, MSUB kept pressure on the WOU goaltenders with 17 shots, 11 of them on goal.
The Wolves could not get their offense in synch throughout the contest as they registered only three shots on goal (11 shots total).
Rachelle Kliewer and
Sam Slezak led the Wolves with three shots apiece.
Western Oregon's goal keeper tandem of
Brittney Rigtrup and
Kelsie Blachly recorded eight saves (seven by Rigtrup) but they were outdone by Yellowjackets' goalie Jordan Fenwick, who earned the shutout with three saves.
The Western Oregon soccer team will now return to Monmouth for its 2009 season finale as it takes on Central Washington, Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 3:00 p.m.
