ELLENSBURG, Wash. - The Western Oregon University women's soccer team scored two goals in the first half to claim a 2-0 victory over Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe Central Washington Thursday, (Oct. 8).
With the win, the Wolves see their record improve to 3-8-3 (2-5-0), while Central Washington drops to 4-7-1 (1-3-1) on the season.
WOU junior forward
Rachelle Kliewer scored the first of Western's two goals on a penalty kick in the 28th minute. This marks her seventh goal of the season, putting her in a tie for second-most goals scored in the conference.
Freshman
Chelsy Okuma was responsible for the Wolves' second goal, as she scored from 35 yards out off of a loose ball that resulted from a corner kick. The score was Okuma's first career goal in a Wolves uniform.
WOU was limited to five total shots compared to 22 for CWU but made the most of its opportunities with four shots on goal and the two scores. Kliewer attempted two shots, and Okuma and seniors
Jessica Hicks and
Sam Slezak each got off one shot apiece.
Defensively, junior goalkeeper
Brittney Rigtrup made 10 saves on Central Washington's 22 shots as the Wildcats could not find the back of the net. Rigtrup now moves into fourth place in the conference in total saves with 45.
The Western Oregon women's soccer team returns to Monmouth, Ore., Saturday, Oct. 10, as they play host to non-conference opponent Oregon Tech. The game is scheduled for a 4:00 pm kick-off.
