BELMONT, Calif. - The Western Oregon men's basketball team earned its second double-digit win of the young season over Notre Dame de Namur as it defeated the Argonauts 72-53, Saturday (Nov. 28), in the final game of the NDNU Thanksgiving Classic.
The Wolves are now 4-1 on the season while NDNU dropped to 1-4.
Western Oregon jumped on Notre Dame de Namur early and never looked back. After the Argonauts took an early 5-4 lead, the Wolves scored 39 of the next 49 points to take a 43-15 into the half. WOU shot 54.8-percent from the field (17-of-31) while NDNU to a 20.8-percent mark and 1-of-10 from behind the arc in the opening stanza. NDNU also turned the ball over 14 times in the first half compared to just six for the Wolves.
"We got on them early and were able to build a sizable lead," Western Oregon head coach Craig Stanger said. "They had a hard time with our pressure and they didn't find a rhythm shooting the ball."
Matt Schmidt, who was named to the all-tournament team, was the driving offensive force in the first period as he scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half. He shot 8-of-13 from the field to go along with three assists and three steals. Point guard
Blair Wheadon was also a 'stat-stuffer' with five steals and five assists to go along with 12 points.
Tarance Glynn was the only other Wolf in double-figures with 14, as he went 5-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-2 from three-point range. This is the first win of the season for WOU in which it has not had five student-athletes score in double-figures.
Rico Myles was the leading rebounder for Western Oregon with eight boards while Glynn chipped in with seven.
"This was a good bounce back win for us after yesterday especially to get a win against a team on their home floor," Stanger noted. "It was good to go 2-1 over these last three games and we will now return home and get ready for the No. 1 team in the country (BYU-Hawaii)."
Western Oregon will host the No. 1 nationally ranked BYU-Hawaii Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7:00 p.m.
