LOGAN, Utah - Utah State used a 15-0 run over a six minute stretch to earn a 78-42 victory over the Western Oregon men's basketball team, in front of 9,368 fans at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum, Tuesday, Dec. 29th.
The win was the Aggies' (10-4) sixth in its last seven games, and it ended the Wolves' (6-3) attempt at its second three-game winning streak this season.
WOU hung with USU in the early part of the game, but in the final minutes of the first half and the beginning of the second half Utah State would seize control. With the Wolves down 31-23 with 3:08 remaining in the opening period, the Aggies went on a 10-2 run the close the half, including scoring the final five points. Utah State carried that momentum into the second half, as it held WOU without a basket for the first 4:43, en route to outscoring them 10-0 during the run.
Jared Quayle led the Aggies with 18 points, as he went a perfect 4-for-4 from three point range. Tyler Newbold added a double-double with 11 points and a team-best 11 rebounds.
Rico Myles was the leading scorer for the Wolves, as he poured in 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting.
The physicality of the Aggies also got to the Wolves. USU outrebounded WOU 42-24 and outshot them 46.4-percent to 34.6-percent, including holding them to just 19.2-percent shooting in the second half.
"We showed some weaknesses against a good team," said Western Oregon head coach Craig Stanger. "We were able to hang with them for the first three-quarters of the first half, but then they knocked down some key shots and we didn't respond."
WOU shot only four free throws in the game compared to 20 for USU. Utah State also outscored Western 30-12 from long range as they took nearly half its shots from deep (27-of-56).
"We let the game get way from us for a while, but our guys competed hard and I am proud of their efforts," continued Stanger. "We will learn from these mistakes as we head into our Division II games this weekend."
The Wolves men's team will be traveling to the Metro State/Mines Holiday Classic Jan. 1-2. They will face Metro State, Jan. 1st, then take on Colorado School of Mines, Jan 2nd.
