MONMOUTH, Ore. - Keisha Gordon scored 20 points and Hannah Munger added 18 and 10 rebounds as George Fox defeated Western Oregon 59-53.
The win moved the Bruins to 7-2 on the season, while dropping the Wolves to 5-7.
In a game which saw 12 lead changes it took a 14-5 run by the Bruins down the stretch to secure the win. After facing its largest deficit of the game at 48-45, George Fox buckled down. They went 2-of-4 from the field and 10-of-13 from the free throw line, while holding to 1-of-5 from the floor and forcing them into two turnovers.
The Bruins frontcourt of Gordon and Munger helped them control the glass, as GFU outrebounded the Wolves 33-22, including 11-3 on the offensive boards. George Fox also held a 17-point advantage from the free throw line as they went 23-of-29 from the charity stripe compared to just 6-of-6 for WOU.
"They outscraped us," said WOU head coach Greg Bruce.
Katie Torland once again led the Wolves in scoring. She registered 16 points on 5-of-13 shooting, including going 4-of-6 from three-point range. She now has 994 points in her Western Oregon career and 1,143 overall.
Meaghan White also scored in double-figures for Western Oregon with a career-best 13 points.
Much like the rest of the game, the first half saw its share of lead changes. George Fox jumped out to a 14-6 lead, WOU fought back to take a one-point advantage at 21-20 with 6:17 left in the first half. This would be the Wolves' only lead of the period. George Fox then scored six straight points to take back a lead it would not relinquish until the 8:57 mark in the second period. Western Oregon would grab its largest lead of the game at 48-45, with just over five minutes remaining before George Fox scored 14 of the final 19 points for the win.
As a team, WOU was 7-of-19 from long range, but just 10-of-29 on two-point field goals.
Turnovers were a problem for both squads, as Western Oregon turned the ball over 23 times and George Fox had 26.
The WOU women's basketball team will now travel to Colorado to face Adams State (Jan. 1) and Colorado School of Mines (Jan. 2).
