LACEY, Wash. - The Western Oregon University softball team split a doubleheader with Saint Martin's 5-4 and 14-0 Saturday (Mar. 7) in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference game.
The Wolves' record moved to 6-4 in the GNAC as the Saint's went to 1-9 in the conference and 2-13 on the season.
Game 1
Kristi Sigafoos hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Saint Martin's to a 5-4 victory in game one.
Morgan Klemm led off the bottom of the seventh with a triple but after two SMU outs Klemm remained at third. WOU then walked the next two batters to load the bases and bring Sigafoos to the plate with the winning run at second base. She then delivered the game-winning double to propel the Saints to their second victory of the season.
Western Oregon had broken a 3-3 tie in the top of seventh on a pinch hit RBI single by
Tierra-Lyn Cuba.
Both teams had eight hits in the contest but none of WOU's went for extra bases as SMU had five with three doubles, a triple and a home run.
Jessica Wood suffered her first loss of the season as she fell to 3-1. She went the complete game for the Wolves giving up five runs and eight hits while striking out two and walking six.
Game 2
Stephanie Albrecht pitched complete game three-hitter and
Kylee Hancock had four RBIs as Western Oregon defeated Saint Martin's 14-0.
Albrecht (1-2) went six shutout innings giving up just three hits while striking out two and walking one to earn her first victory as a Wolf.
Western Oregon collected 17 hits and seven WOU players registered a multi-hit performance in the game while the same number also notched an RBI. In addition to Hancock which went 2-for-4 with a home run,
Jessica Hallmark was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run.
Tyler Sutherland and
Tierra-Lyn Cuba both scored three runs in the contest as WOU's first three hitters in the lineup went 7-for-12 with five RBIs and eight runs scored.
WOU was leading 1-0 entering the top of the third but jumped in front 5-0 after Hancock's grand slam. The Wolves would tack on two in the fourth and would get seven more in the sixth to seal the victory.
